It’s been nearly five years since August Alsina and his boyfriend, Zu, have known each other. Yet Monday was one of the rare times either man explicitly acknowledged their romance. This time, it was Zu. Typically private about their relationship, he used social media to clock rumors about their age difference and whether they feel pressured to be together. What Sparked A Clapback?
As previously reported, the boyfriend riled up the internet when he posted a mirror selfie with his boyfriend at a club appearance. The photo shows August Alsina standing behind Zu with his arm draped around him. It went up on X on Sunday, August 31, with the caption, “Can’t get enough of you.”
The post collected over 1.2 million views, 2,600 retweets, and 29,000 likes on the original platform alone. At least 300 comments were also posted. As blogs and media outlets reshared Zu’s message and selfie, reactions grew across social platforms.

Zu Clocks Internet Rumors About Dating August Alsina
A little over 24 hours after sharing the mirror selfie, Zu hopped on Instagram Stories with more than a lil’ message. He shared a screenshot from his Notes app showing a lengthy paragraph. From the jump, Zu clarified that the post is his “first and only time addressing this,” adding he couldn’t care less about “external validation.” Zu then clocked the talks surrounding his and August Alsina’s age difference and when they met.
“I don’t need anyone’s likeness, but I’m a grown a*s man, with his own mind and free will…if I ever do anything it’s because I want to do it. I met August when I was already of age, an adult. Aug didn’t even know me when I was 16 or 17…not sure where that came from…yea there’s a slight age difference but y’all pick and choose who to judge when it comes to that,” Zu wrote.
It’s unclear how long they’ve been boyfriend and boyfriend. However, Zu clarified that the end of this year will mark the fifth year they’ve known each other, and that August speaks in the context of their future. “…because that’s where we plan to make it,” he wrote.
Additionally, he explained that he’s not an “internet person” and prefers to prioritize his peace and protect his relationship, especially with harsh media coverage.
“August is my boyfriend, and we’re happy with each other, simple…,” Zu wrote, adding that being private and silent has allowed the internet to run wild with rumors. “Aug gives me a GREAT life & I’m thnakful. What y’all don’t know is, that I run this relationship…I call the shots, August just shows up and supports me in whatever I want to do. He supports my dream, HE IS A DREAM! Nothing is ever forced on ether end, hope this clears up any confusion.”
August Alsina Reacts To His Boyfriend’s Message
Zu’s choice of words, including comments about running the relationship, rubbed some fans the wrong way. Just peep some of the nearly 10,000 reactions in The Shade Room’s comment section for proof. However, the person Zu’s post is about (August Alsina) appears unfazed. In fact, on Instagram Stories on Monday, he applauded his boyfriend for using his voice. August reposted Zu’s message and added:
“My bul be chillin, all mysterious n sht. But I loveeeee when the Yung God speaks,” August wrote.
It’s worth noting that despite keeping the everyday details of his relationship private, August Alsina has not publicly denied dating his man at any point. 2024 was the couple’s real pop-out year, from boat selfie videos to car ones. August Alsina stepped in to defend his bae earlier this year when the internet popped off about a risquè post Zu shared about “climbing” him. The singer clarified that Zu gets clearance from him for his posts about their relationship.
“To be clear, Zu comes to me before posting anything involving me. Anyhow, He’s his own man. Let him cook!”
