Back in April, former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid was officially charged with driving while intoxicated–serious physical injury. Britt’s alleged drunken state during Super Bowl weekend led to a car crash that critically injured five-year-old Ariel Young. On Monday, Britt entered a not guilty plea for the accident, according to CBS.
As for the crash, Britt reportedly slammed his Dodge Ram truck into two cars “on an entrance ramp near Arrowhead Stadium” in Kansas City, Missouri. As a result, Ariel suffered “a life-threatening brain injury, a skull fracture, and subdural hematomas.” She was released from the hospital in early April, but was unable to talk, walk or eat on her own at the time.
According to Ariel’s lawyer Tom Porto, the young child will likely suffer from “permanent brain damage” for the remainder of her life. Britt was reportedly driving at 84 mph prior to the impact. He also had a recorded blood alcohol level of 0.113 two hours after the accident, according to CBS.
The criminal complaint against Britt says he acted with “criminal negligence by driving at an excessive rate of speed.” Given the charge, he’s facing a potential jail sentence between one to seven years. CBS reported that the judge on Britt’s case has allowed him to resume driving with restrictions. These restrictions include: passing a Breathalyzer-type test every time he drives. A negative test unlocks an interlock device that allows him to turn on his car.
This restrictive driving was allowed despite Britt’s reported state during the crash and history with violence and drunk driving. At the time of the crash, Britt admitted to an officer on the scene that he had consumed” two to three” drinks and that he takes the prescription drug adderall. The officer also reportedly noticed the smell of alcohol and Britt’s bloodshot red eyes. During a field sobriety test, Britt showed obvious signs of impairment.
According to CBS, within one year Britt pleaded guilty to two charges involving drugs, violence and a DUI. In 2007, he pled guilty to unlicensed gun and drug charges after a road-rage incident. That same year he pled guilty to a separate case involving a DUI and more drug charges.
