Celebrating Black Excellence: Education

Celebrating Black Excellence: Education

The history of slavery has always highlighted the fact that slaves always seemed useful when they lacked the knowledge of literacy. White slaveholders forbidden the educating of slaves because they feared  it would help them revolt against the system.

Nonetheless, even with the possibility of mental and physical abuse if caught trying to read and write, many slaves did not allowed it to stop their hunger of wanting to know more. Slaves like Frederick Douglas and Phillis Wheatley were amongst many who did not let fear stop them from educating themselves.

Well today unfortunately statistics show that there are more black men incarcerated than there are in school. According to BBC News, back in 2007 Barack Obama addressed this very issue, “I know what you know,” he said. “Despite all the progress that has been made, we still have more work to do. We have more work to do when more young black men languish in prison than attend universities and colleges across America.”

With that being said it is always an amazing thing when you do come across black men who fight for an education just like their ancestors did before them. TSR came across a video where a group of educated young boys pursuing careers in medicine while attending VCU.

Check out the black excellence in this video and lets chat! Happy Black History Month!!
