Flint City Councilman Eric Mays has passed away at the age of 65, it has been announced.
The council shared the news of his passing on Saturday (February 24), but they have not yet revealed the cause of his death.
Eric Passed Away Over The Weekend Due To Unknown Circumstances
In a statement released by the City of Flint on its official Facebook page, they wrote:
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Flint City Councilman Eric Mays. A third-term councilman, he was beloved for his bold and courageous service on behalf of Flint’s First Ward, and his strong presence will be deeply missed. Our prayers are with his family, friends, and the entire city of Flint during this time of sorrow.”
Mays served as a member of the Flint City Council from 2013 until his untimely passing, making him one of Flint’s longest-running councilmen.
Upon the announcement of Mays’ death, tributes poured in from all corners of the city.
Flint’s Mayor, Sheldon Neeley, expressed his grief over the loss, praising Mays’ “bold and courageous service.” The mayor further declared that flags at Flint City Hall would fly at half-staff in honor of Mays.
Meanwhile, Ladel Lewis, President of the Flint City Council, also expressed heartfelt words about Mays. She recognized his unshakable commitment to city improvement and stated that the city would deeply feel his absence.
“Councilman Mays was not only a dedicated public servant but also a tireless champion for the people of Flint,” she said, per ABC 12. “His unwavering commitment to the betterment of our community has left an indelible mark, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
At the time of his death, Mays was in the midst of a three-month suspension from the council.
His legal team was challenging the council’s ability to prevent him from attending meetings, per Michigan Live, demonstrating Mays’ determination to serve his duties until his final moments.
During his stint on the council, Flint experienced a series of significant events, most notably the Flint Water Crisis, which started in April 2014.
Eric’s Work As Flint’s Councilman Didn’t Go Unnoticed
As one of the most vocal advocates for his city during this period, Mays’ name became synonymous with his fight for justice and clean water for local residents.
Funeral arrangements for Mays had not been announced at the time of writing.
As the city continues to mourn, the mayor has requested in his statement that the community respects the family’s privacy during this difficult time.
“As our community grieves during this difficult time, on behalf of Councilman Mays’ family, we ask that community members respect their privacy and allow them time and space to mourn. We continue to lift the family in prayer.”
