La La Anthony is getting candid about her journey post-divorce from her ex-husband, Carmelo Anthony. In a raw and emotional sit-down with Angie Martinez on the ‘IRL’ podcast, La La opened up about the pain of navigating their 2021 split in the public eye. Despite the heartbreak, shes learning to push forward and heal, one day at a time. Here’s what she had to say…
Chile, Angie came with the real questions on the latest episode, which dropped on Wednesday, August 20, and La La didnt hesitate to answer. When asked if there were moments La La felt like she couldnt get up after her divorce from Carmelo, La La got candid. Yes, of course. The hardest part of my life and then playing it out publicly, she shared. Theyre watching everything. So then you have the fake smile and youre f***ing dying inside.
La La admitted the public scrutiny made it incredibly hard to process the end of her 17-year marriage. What are you going to do? You gotta push forward, every day a little bit stronger until you get past it, she said, showing her resilience. But she kept it real, noting that even years later, certain moments can still sting. Something will just hit you and itll just hurt or remind you of something, she shared. La La also reflected on the shock of divorce, saying:
Nobody gets married with the thought of getting divorced. You marry somebody thinking thats who youre going to be with for the rest of your life.

Back in October 2022, La La gave fans more tea on what led to the end of her marriage during an insightful convo on Alex Coopers ‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast. She pinpointed Carmelos 2011 trade from the Denver Nuggets to the New York Knicks as the moment things started to unravel.
Im from New York, so being here is nothing new. When we lived here under all of that, thats when things became complicated, La La explained, per PEOPLE. The move to the Big Apple brought a whole new level of chaos to their relationship, she shared.
Additionally, La La revealed how the intense media scrutiny in New York played a major role in their struggles. It is really hard. Thats not the only reason things didnt work out, but things got tough with New York, just constantly being under the spotlight and people watching every little thing, she told Alex.
The constant attention added pressure to an already rocky situation, and La Las reflections show how external factors can weigh heavily on a marriage. Sis was out here trying to hold it together, but the professional and personal changes after moving to New York were ultimately too challenging to work through.
At Fanatics Fest in NYC on August 17, 2024, La La opened up on why shes still holding onto the Anthony surname despite her divorce from her ex-husband. Speaking on a panel, the actress and TV personality gushed about their son Kiyans promising basketball career, revealing its a key reason shes holding onto the name.
The moment of being able to buy Kiyans NBA jersey will be crazy, moderator Taylor Rooks said, per Page Six. La La responded, Thats why I havent changed my last name yet. Im gonna keep it around for a little while! The decision appears to reflect her support for Kiyans NBA dreams, keeping their family connection tight.
