A man has been arrested after he allegedly shot his wife outside of an elementary school in Kansas.

Here’s What Allegedly Happened Between The Man & His Wife
According to PEOPLE, the couple dropped off their children at Cessna Elementary School in Wichita, Kansas, around 9:16 a.m. on Monday, September 23. They had reportedly arrived at the location by utilizing the Lyft rideshare service.
Witnesses reportedly informed authorities that the couple was then seen arguing. Subsequently, the husband — who has not yet been publicly identified — shot his wife. In turn, the woman — who also has not yet been identified — “ran towards the school for help.”

“At the point that our deputy arrived, [the victim] had the gun pointing at her head, and the deputy took cover. And then, when the suspect stepped a little bit away from our victim, the deputy shot the suspect,” Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter reportedly told reporters.
At that point, the man was arrested and taken into custody.
More Details Are Released About The Incident
According to the outlet, the wife was taken to a hospital with a “code red” injury. USA Today adds that the woman was reportedly shot by her husband in the chest. To note, no additional information has been publicly shared about the woman’s current condition.
Sheriff Easter has explained that the incident remained isolated between the husband and wife despite its proximity to the elementary school.
“Law enforcement showed up within two minutes of the shooting coming out, and it never got into the school itself,” he told reporters per PEOPLE. “There was a district person here [and] a few kids that were outside. She saw the disturbance taking place in the street and so she got some of those kids inside that were coming to school.”
Additionally, the sheriff shared more information about what reportedly prompted the altercation.
“There was a small fight that took place between the deputy and the suspect…” Sheriff Easter briefly stated.
PEOPLE and USA Today have reportedly contacted Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office for additional information about the incident.
Parents React To The Shocking Incident At The Elementary School
According to KWCH, Cessna Elementary School was immediately placed on lockdown amid the shocking incident.
Mark Meeks, a parent of one of the students, spoke to the outlet about being scared “to death.”
“[It] scares us to death because we don’t know what our son inside is doing or what he’s thinking or any other children that’s inside the school…It’s scaring us like there’s no tomorrow,” Meeks explained of the incident.
Additionally, a parent named Wesley Busey shared another sentiment.
“It’s a sad situation… but safety first. I just want to make sure [my son’s] mental health is alright today,” Busey explained.
According to the outlet, “additional counselors and resources” were made available to the students and staff between Monday and Tuesday, September 24.
