Roommates, members of the House and Senate Democrats recently kneeled in silence and wore Kente cloths in Emancipation Hall for exactly 8 minutes and 46 seconds in remembrance of George Floyd. The Democrats also unveiled a brand new police reform bill in an effort to stop the police brutality that has led to continuous protests across the country.
As a show of support and solidarity, the House and Senate Democrats recently held a 8-minute-and-46-second moment of silence at Emancipation Hall in the U.S. Capitol while wearing Kente cloths. You may recall that 8 minutes and 46 seconds is the amount of time that Derek Chauvin had his knee to George Floyd’s neck before he passed away.
Led by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, almost a dozen other Democrats were also on hand for the remembrance, including Kamala Harris, Cory Booker and Chuck Schumer. They were at the U.S. Capitol to announce a new, in-depth plan to address police brutality.

Labeled the Justice in Policing Act of 2020, it would effectively limit qualified immunity protections, create a national police misconduct registry, ban chokeholds, restrict the transfer of military-grade equipment to police departments and make lynching a federal hate crime.
“We are here to honor George Floyd,” Pelosi said before the moment of silence began. After the moment passed, she called attention to the length of time that Floyd suffered before taking his last breaths, “You see how long it was to have that knee on his neck,” she said.
