Whew! If you live in New York, get ready for a change you probably never expected. According to CBS New York, a recently-passed state law, it is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 years old to purchase a can of whipped cream. Legislation S.2819-A is meant to prevent teenagers from using canned whipped cream to inhale nitrous oxide, otherwise known as “whippets.”
The law, which New York State Senator Joseph Addabbo sponsored, took effect in November 2021. However, it is just now about to be enforced. Sen. Addabbo says the issue was first brought to the state’s attention after an increase in complaints regarding empty cans lining the streets.
Whippets are very dangerous. Arch academy’s website explains the hazardous side effects that individuals can exhibit, which consist of judgment and impaired muscle control. It causes some users to walk off balconies or stumble into traffic. Others have suffered heart failure, suffocation, or seizures. Overdose can cause hallucinations or send the user into a coma. Occasionally, a metal whippet container explodes with disastrous effects.
Sen. Addabbo spoke out about the new law stating, “Nitrous oxide is a legal chemical for legitimate professional use, but when used improperly, it can be extremely lethal.” He added,” Sadly, young people buy and inhale this gas to get ‘high’ because they mistakenly believe it is a ‘safe’ substance. This law will eliminate easy access to this dangerous substance for our youth.”
Anyone in New York caught selling whipped cream canisters to someone under 21 faces a $250 fine for their first offense and up to $500 for subsequent violations. Several Roommates were shocked by the new law. One commented, “Wahhhhh. That’s crazy.” Another wrote, “I’m pretty sure they got bigger problems but ok, make a law about whipped cream.”
