Sixth Grade Student Opens Fire & Injures Three People At A Idaho Middle School

A sixth-grade student was taken into custody early Thursday after authorities said that she opened fire while inside of a Rigby, Idaho middle school injuring two other students and a custodian.

According to AP News, the victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries as they were all shot in their limbs. Steve Anderson, the Jefferson County Sheriff said that the young girl pulled a handgun out of her backpack and fired multiple rounds. She was eventually disarmed by a teacher, who held her until authorities arrived.

ABC News reports that the custodian that was injured was released from the hospital, while the two children who were injured will stay in the hospital overnight. Two people were shot in the hallway, and the third was shot as she made her way outside.

It is unclear how the child gained access to the gun, and the motive behind the shooting is unclear at the moment.

“We don’t have a lot of details at this time of ‘why’—that is being investigated. We’re following all leads,” said Sheriff Anderson.

Classes have been canceled for Friday districtwide, and counseling services are being offered.

Idaho Governor Brad Little said, “I am praying for the lives and safety of those involved in today’s tragic events. Thank you to our law enforcement agencies and school leaders for their efforts in responding to the incident.”

Superintendent Chad Martin also said, “This is the worst nightmare a school district could ever face. We prepare for it, but we’re never truly ready for it.”
