Tampon Shortage Impacts U.S. Amid Pandemic & Inflation

With a shortage of chicken, ketchup packets, and baby formula, it looks like tampons are also hard to find these days.

According to CNN, women who menstruate are having a hard time finding the product on the shelves of stores.

After a Time’s article highlighting the shortage, retailers and manufacturers “acknowledged” the shortage of supplies, “confirming complaints that have been circulating on social media for months,” the website also states.

The shortage of tampons is being caused by “supply constraints” surrounding plastic and cotton, which have been in demand since the beginning of the pandemic.

The Ukraine and Russian war, in addition to a Texas drought, are all contributing to the shortage.

Some say because of this, they are faced with price gouging from Amazon, but a spokesperson from the company spoke to CNN and says that’s not true. The spokesperson also said that they have policies in place to “help ensure sellers are pricing their products competitively.”

A report from Bloomberg stated the price of tampons has increased by 10% compared to a year ago.

Andre Schulten, Procter & Gamble’s chief financial officer recently stated on a call:

Getting raw and packed materials to the places we need to get them to continues to be costly and highly volatile.

A P&G spokesperson told CNN that the situation is temporary.

We understand it is frustrating for consumers when they can’t find what they need. We can assure you this is a temporary situation.

As of now, officials haven’t said when the issue will be resolved. Hopefully the shortage will end soon, though.

Roomies, what do you think about this?
