Roommates, mass shootings have become an unfortunate reality in the United States, and recent reports have put into perspective just how many times we have had to live with the tragedies.
According to CBS News, the number of mass shootings across the United States in 2019 has surpassed the number of days in the year so far. A gun violence research group called Gun Violence Archive reports that as of September 1st, there have been 283 mass shootings in the U.S.
So far, there have only been 247 days in the year, making 2019 the first year to average more than one mass shooting per day.
The GVA defines a mass shooting as any incident in which at least four people were shot, excluding the shooter. So far, the list includes many high profile tragedies, some of which have been covered by mainstream media and some have not.
There were three mass shootings in the past month that rocked the nation. On August 3rd, 22 people were killed in a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, making it the deadliest shooting of the year. Immediately after, a shooter left nine people dead and 27 injured in Dayton, Ohio on August 4th. On August 31, seven people died at the hands of a shooter in Midland, Texas.
The GVA has reported 37,662 total mass shooting incidents, resulting in 9,932 deaths and 19,868 injuries in the past 10 years.
Mass shootings have become a major concern for law makers and corporations. So much so, that gun control is now on everybody’s radar. As we previously reported, Walmart has opted to stop the sale of hand guns and ammunition following the shooting in El Paso.
Walmart announced it will completely stop the sale of handgun ammunition and ammunition commonly used in assault-style weapons after getting rid of all of its current inventory. Walmart customers without permits will also be forbidden to only carry guns within the store.
