The Weeknd Will Headline The Super Bowl Halftime Show

Roommates, if you are a fan of The Weeknd, then today is a moment for you! The Canadian crooner took to his Instagram account moments ago to confirm he will be gracing the NFL Super Bowl stage come February 2021. A stage that heavy hitters like Beyonce, Bruno Mars, NSYNC, Britney Spears, Coldplay, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga and so many more have all graced!

If you remember, just last year, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira brought some Latin flava to the Super Bowl halftime show and tapped other Latin sensations Bad Bunny and J.Balvin for their performance. Many people took to social media afterwards to proclaim that may have been the best halftime show in recent years, despite garnering 1,300 FCC complaints.

Clearly going into a post Covid-19 halftime show, The Weeknd may need to tailor his performance. He spoke briefly about the announcement, saying: “We all grow up watching the world’s biggest acts playing the Super Bowl, and one can only dream of being in that position.” He included: “I’m humbled, honored and ecstatic to be the center of that infamous stage this year.”

The move comes after the NFL has tried to make strides towards inclusivity and change. For decades the show has primarily featured rock and pop acts. In fact, this will be the second year that Jay-Z’s Roc Nation will be producing the halftime show. In a statement, Jay-Z said: “The Weeknd has introduced a sound all his own. His soulful uniqueness has defined a new generation of greatness in music and artistry.”

The Weeknd has had a big year so far ,with his smash hit ‘Blinding Lights’ that won him MTV’s Video Music Award’s most prestigious award, ‘Video of the Year.’ I think it’s safe to say, we’re all interested in what The Weeknd may have up his sleeve! The halftime show will be in Tampa, Florida.
