Roommates, following weeks of back-and-forth, it appears that TikTok has made a firm stance against Trump’s plans to permanently ban the social media app in the U.S. TikTok just filed an official lawsuit against the Trump administration to stop its app from no longer being available to American users.
TikTok has sued the Trump administration in response to what it said is a “heavily politicized” executive order that seeks to ban the incredibly popular video app from the U.S. The lawsuit is the latest incident in a major feud between TikTok and Trump, which has continued to escalate in recent weeks. The company currently has100 million users in the U.S. alone and is owned by a Chinese company, ByteDance.
In a California federal court, TikTok argued that the Trump administration did not give the company a fair chance to defend itself from allegations that it poses a national security risk. The company also claimed Trump’s executive order illegally rests on emergency powers law in ways that do not apply to TikTok.
In a blog post announcing the lawsuit, TikTok stated the following:
“We far prefer constructive dialogue over litigation. But with the Executive Order threatening to bring a ban on our US operations — eliminating the creation of 10,000 American jobs and irreparably harming the millions of Americans who turn to this app for entertainment, connection, and legitimate livelihoods that are vital especially during the pandemic — we simply have no choice.”
Previously, the company explored selling its U.S. business to Microsoft. However, with the new lawsuit, TikTok is going on the offensive — and challenging what it said is an unlawful executive order and a hastily completed national security review.
