#TSRPositiveImages: ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Producers Establish Real-Life Justice Fund In Honor Of Beloved Character Poussey

If y’all are #OrangeIsTheNewBlack fans like me, chances are you’ll have a busy weekend ahead binging the final season of the hit #Netflix series because who wants to be outside in that heat anyway.

It may be hard to let go and say goodbye to some of our fave characters one last time, but please take some solace in knowing that there is actually some good of OINTB coming to an end. The show’s producers have established “The Poussey Washington Fund,” which is an initiative to raise money for a selection of nonprofit advocacy groups fighting for criminal justice reform as well as protecting immigrants’ rights and ending mass incarceration, @deadline reports.

The fund is named after one of the show’s most beloved characters Poussey, played by actress Samira Wiley, who was killed by a guard when he pinned her to the ground in season 4 (sorry for the spoiler). The fictional death recalled the real-life 2014 death of Staten Island’s Eric Garner.

In this final season, Taystee establishes a fictional version of the fund by offering micro-loans to women getting out of prison.

The real-life version of the fund will help women in similar situations and more.

“Through the Poussey Washington Fund, our characters can live on and continue to make an impact after the show has come to an end. Taystee recognized an opportunity to make a difference for her fellow inmates, and we saw no reason why we couldn’t launch our own initiative to have an effect in the real world,” said the show’s creator Jenji Kohan.

The initiative will benefit the following eight nonprofit organizations: A New Way of Life: Reentry Project, Anti Recidivism Coalition, College & Community Fellowship, Freedom For Immigrants, Immigrant Defenders Law Center, The National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Woman and Girls, unPrison Project, Women’s Prison Association.

The Poussey Washington Fund is supported by GoFundMe.org, and donations will be evenly distributed between those organizations.

We’re happy to see these women use their platforms to effect real change! Let us know what you think about the final season of OINTB and stay here for the latest!
