The iconic duo got real about rebuilding their friendship and what led to their rumored fallout. After years of alleged ups and downs, and a little friendly competition, they’re seemingly giving us the unity we’ve been craving.
During the interview, Gayle King asked about the origins of the longtime feud rumors—whether the media exaggerated or if it started small and grew over time. Brandy and Monica opened up and finally cleared the air just in time for this highly anticipated joint tour.
“It started as nothing,” they both said simultaneously. “And, it really did turn into something. The reason that I was so insistent that we communicate directly is that you take [everyone else] out of the conversation. There was a lot of confusion and conflict and there was a lot of people around,” said Monica. And, Brandy added, “The song didn’t help either, we were fighting over a boy.” Finally, Monica joked, “And, we don’t even like the same type of boy.”

The Tea Behind Those Feud Rumors
Brandy and Monica’s legendary feud allegedly goes way back to the late ’90s before they recorded that iconic ‘The Boy Is Mine’ collab. The song’s producer, Rodney Jerkins, said there was tension and a whole lotta questions asked to make it work. Fast forward years later, folks wondered if Brandy threw shade at Monica during the 2016 Soul Train Awards. But, Monica had to clap back in an IG comment that same year, by complimenting Brandy’s legacy and giving her flowers.
The real reunion, however, didn’t happen till their ‘Verzuz’ battle in 2020 — it was allegedly the first time these two queens saw each other in years! And, in 2024, they came together to collaborate on Ariana Grande’s remix of ‘The Boy Is Mine,’ marking a key moment in their reunion.
