D.L. Hughley is sharing his unfiltered thoughts on Diddys trial verdict, and hes not here for the folks celebrating by dousing themselves in baby oil to mark the occasion. In a new interview, the comedian is calling out the morally bankrupt reactions. Additionally, he offered his own perspective on Diddy’s charges, claiming that some were allegedly only handed to him due to his race. Here’s the lowdown…
D.L. Hughley had a lot to say on Diddys case, saying the music mogul skated on the heaviest charges. In a recent chat with TMZ Live, Hughley broke it down, saying Diddys high-powered legal team and deep pockets allegedly played a major role in the outcome.
Its clear that Puffy wasnt charged for the things he did, he was chased in this vague even the judge, you could see he was having a hard time buying it, Hughley said. He pointed out that Diddys charges, like racketeering and sex trafficking, were too murky to stick. But that didnt mean he was innocent in the court of public opinion.
Money will buy a great defense. If hes charged and he has a public defender, hes convicted, he added. He stressed that Diddys lawyers did what they were paid to do by dodging the most serious charges the best way they could. But the feds didnt hit him with domestic abuse charges. Hughley thinks that is where the real issue lies. They charged him for all of these terms that they just couldnt prove, he said, taking issue with how the court system ended up playing out.
On July 2, on the day of Diddys verdict, supporters flocked to the Manhattan courthouse eagerly awaiting the trials outcome. Folks were reportedly chanting in Diddy’s support and pouring baby oil all over themselves once the verdict was read. The baby oil was poured over fans was a nod to Diddys freak off allegations.
Hughley was not happy with the publics reaction, though. I think theyre people who are morally bankrupt, he expressed. He acknowledged Diddy dodging the RICO and sex trafficking charges, but said that doesnt erase the ugly truth. Even if Puffy wasnt convicted of the most serious terms, he still whooped the woman in front of everyone, he said, referring to the 2016 hotel footage of Diddy attacking Cassie. D.L. also hinted at a racial angle, saying, Theres no denying that […] I think he was overcharged… Obviously, you can see that. But for me to celebrate that?”
On July 2, after a seven-week federal trial in New York, a jury acquitted Diddy of the big charges, racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. But he was found guilty on two lesser counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, tied to ex-girlfriends Cassie and Jane. These Mann Act violations could land him up to 10 years per count, although prosecutors are reportedly pushing for four to five years, according to the New York Post. Meanwhile, Judge Arun Subramanian denied Diddy bail, citing his propensity for violence, so hes expected to stay at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn until his sentencing. Officially set for October 3, the date was confirmed after a July 8 hearing.
