Iggy found herself in the hot seat at the peak of her career when people accused her of using a blaccent in her music to fuel her success. In her ABC interview, she confronted the race-related debates head-on. I think it was a lot, she admitted, reflecting on the chaos.
I said in retrospect that I said as I got older where Im like, Hmm, thats a horrible f****** take that you had, but it was just a bad perfect storm.
At 24, the ‘Black Widow’ artist says she was navigating heated cultural conversations with a limited view of America or culture, which she now sees as a misstep. Looking back, Iggy also expressed regret over how she handled the heavy criticism she received. I think sometimes I just regret having an opinion at all, because it wasnt necessarily my place to have an opinion, she shared. See the video HERE!
This, along with several reported label disputes before going the independent route, Iggy announced her retirement from music in 2024. In a tweet on her X account, per Billboard, Iggy Azalea clarified she left music to pursue other projects, not because anyone “bullied” her out.
Per the ABC report, by 2019, Iggys career took a sharp turn when the music industry started giving her the cold shoulder. I think the hardest part about it was seeing how the other artists would distance themselves from me publicly, that I was only welcomed in secret, she revealed. The isolation stung, and it played a big role in her decision to retire in 2023. Iggy got emotional talking about the toll of the industrys politics, saying, I was just tired of it.
Now, stepping away from music, does she miss it? Yeah, of course there are parts of music that I miss, Iggy confessed. Sometimes, Ill have the itch and be like, I need to get in the studio. But the grind of promotion, concerts, and industry drama? Shes over it. More importantly, Iggys protecting her peace for her son, Onyx.
I dont want to be a slave to that cycle Its one thing to sacrifice those things up when its just you. But Id also be signing my son up to sacrifice his life, she explained.
Back in January, Iggy hopped on a Twitch livestream with Amouranth and aired out Playboi Cartis absence from their 4-year-old son, Onyxs life. When a fan asked her to nudge Carti about his delayed album I Am Music, Iggy didnt hold back. I dont speak to him, my love. We havent heard from that man in over like, six months. We dont know where he is. Have no idea, have no association, she said, keeping it all the way real. Iggy, whos been open about being a single mom, previously shared on the ‘Dinners On Me’ podcast that shes very much the only parent with no co-parenting in sight, per Vibe.
