According to TMZ, Alphonso Smith Jr. reportedly died by suicide Wednesday at a housing community in Florida. The former NFL cornerback was 40 years old. Before his death, Alphonso shared a deeply emotional final Facebook post that appeared to reflect the emotional struggles he was experiencing. “Do not cry for me! I tried everything in my power to fight the demons behind the ones that someone put into ME! I did not want to be that WAY! I know I have disappointed so many folks. This is a DEMON in me! But not only me! It’s EVERYONE! I have HURT so many! I needed help & did not get it!” Alphonso repeatedly apologized in the post, described himself as a “coward,” and referenced abuse he said he experienced as a young boy. Alphonso made his mark at Wake Forest University from 2004 to 2008, earning All-American honors during his senior season before being inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame in 2022. The Denver Broncos selected him in the 2009 NFL Draft, and he was later traded to the Detroit Lions, where he spent three seasons before ending his career after the 2012 campaign.
